To Avigdor Arikha, 9 April 1956: "Than you for your letter. I am greatly touched that the little play stays with you like that. The problem of the title is still giving me trouble. I have the impression that I must avoid the word 'End'."

SB had made the acquaintence of the painter Avigdor Arikha (1929-2010) on 25 June at a dinner at the home of Alain Bosquet, days after attending a performance of En attendant Godot at the Théâtre Hébertot; after the play Arikha had spoken enthusiastically about what he had seen to the man seated next to him in the café, only later to discover that his interlocutor was the play's author.
