To Barney Rosset, Grove Press, 20 November 1958: "I arrived in London a week before the opening and 5 days before the 1st dress rehearsal. My intention was to concern myself only with Krapp, but on arrival I found Endgame in such a state that I had to take it on too. Impossible however to do much in so short a time. But Krapp made up for everything. Unerringly directed by McWhinnie Magee gave a very fine performance, for me by far the most satisfactory experience in the theatre up to date." -The Letters of Samuel Beckett: 1957-1965, p. 176
To Mary Manning Howe, 21 November 1958: "Powerful week in London rehearsing Krapp. Terrific performance by Magee, pitilessly directed by McWhinnie. Best experience in the theatre ever. Endgame not good, though McGowran could have been. No production. Press sour. ... Boozed round for a few days after the opening, in the murk, living with Magee in a boarding-house West Cromwell Road, need you to describe it, then colapsed back here coughing up everything." -The Letters of Samuel Beckett: 1957-1965, p. 179
