Conserved by the Northeast Document Conservation Center, February 2012. Treatment performed: Written and photographic documentation was provided. The volume was collated and disbound. The inks were tested for solubility. Pressure-sensitive tape and repair cloth were removed mechanically from the cover boards and residual adhesive was reduced with local applications of ethanol. Library materials were removed from the back flyleaf and pastedown with local applications of moisture. The barcode label was removed using heat and acetone. Pages were surface cleaned where necessary. The pages were immersed in ethanol to reduce oil staining and were washed in filtered water. They were alkalized (deacidified) with calcium hydroxide, then sized with a 1% solution of methyl cellulose. Tears were mended and folds guarded where necessary with Japanese kozo paper and wheat starch paste. The volume was sewn on linen cords with linen thread. New cloth endbands were attached to replace fragmentary originals. The binding was repaired by rebacking using goat leather. Lines were tooled in gold leaf onto the spine, and the volume was titled using a gold-stamped leather label. The volume was housed in a cloth-covered drop-spine box.
