Description

This is the bookstamp of Dr. Samual Max (Shemu’el Mosheh) Melamed, an American writer and journalist. He received his Ph.D in Jewish philosophy and was considered to be one of the highest ranking Jewish journalists of his time.

Dr. Samuel Melamed was born on December 15, 1885, in Wilkowsky, Lithuania, and in 1914 he immigrated to the United States. Melamed eventually came to Chicago to become editor of the Daily Jewish Courier, and was also an associate editor of the Chicago Abendpost.

He took deep and active interest in Zionism, and was Chairman of the Central Zionist Committee of Chicago. Samuel wrote extensively in Hebrew, German, Yiddish, and English on problems of Jewish nationalism, sociology, and philosophy. His contributions appeared in many publications in the United States, and other countries. Among his published volumes were: Theory, Origin, and History of the Idea of Peace (1909); The State (1910); Shadows and Figures (with preface by Zangwill, 1912); Psychology of the Jewish Mind (1913); and On the Eve of Redemption (1917). Samuel was an editor of Reflex.

Samuel Max Melamed died in New York City on June 19, 1938, at the age of 52.
