Title

Bookplate of Philipp Bloch

Subject

Bloch, Philipp, 1841-1923

Description

This is the bookplate of Dr. Philipp Bloch (1841-1923), a rabbi and prolific author on Jewish subjects.

He studied at the University of Breslau and the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau, where he was a student of Jacob Bernays (whose signature also appears in the Brisman collection). After he was ordained as a rabbi in 1867, he organized a Jewish school in Munich and later served as a rabbi in Posen in 1871. Bloch authored many works on haggadic studies and later on Polish Jewry.

At the top of his bookplate is the Hebrew phrase "Torah zo Orah," meaning Torah is happiness. This phrase is a play on words of אורה זו תורה or "Orah zo Torah," meaning happiness is Torah. In the center appears a photo of Dr. Philipp Bloch. The bottom of the bookplate has a German inscription indicating that Bloch was a "Rabbi in Posen" from 1872-1920. The bookplate has been ripped by a previous owner.
