Title
Bookplate of Abraham-Aba Frieder
Subject
Frieder, Abraham-Aba, 1911-1946
Description
This is the bookplate of Rabbi Abraham-Aba Armin Frieder (1911-1946), who served as rabbi in various communities in Czechoslovakia and later Bratislava.
Rabbi Frieder is known for his efforts with the Slovak Jewish underground movement to rescue fellow Jews during the Holocaust. Frieder also participated in negotiations with the Nazis to save Jews by paying bribes. He was taken to a labor camp in 1944 after the Germans occupied Slovakia. He later escaped and sought refuge in a Catholic monastery.
When the war ended, he became chief rabbi of Slovakia. He held that position until his death in 1946. His bookplate features a burning menorah with a Magen David (Jewish star) above it. The Magen David is set behind the symbol of the high priests (hands), indicating that Frieder is a descendent of Aaron. Above these symbols is the Hebrew word "Ge'ulah," meaning redemption. The backdrop of the bookplate appears to be a rough sketch of what was at the time Erets Yisrael (now Israel).
