Description
This is the signature of Moses (also Mosheh) Berlin (1821-1888), a Russian scholar and Jewish government official from Shklov, Belarus.
He was educated at the Universities of Konigsberg and Bonn and worked as a teacher upon completing his studies in 1849. In 1853 he became an adviser to the governor-general of White Russia (Belarus) on Jewish affairs. In 1856 he was appointed adviser on foreign creeds and assisted in legislative matters concerning Jews.
Berlin was a prolific author and he published many books in both Russian and Hebrew. His signature is followed by the Hebrew date.
