Bookstamp of B. (Bernhard) Beer

Subject

Beer, B. (Bernhard), 1801-1861

Description

This is the bookstamp of Bernhard Beer (1801-1861), a German author and theologian. Beer wrote frequently about Jewish history, philosophy and Bible exegesis. He also campaigned for the emancipation of Jews.

Beer advocated in particular for affordable education for poor Jews, who could not pay for private tutors like their wealthier co-religionists (all Jews had limited access to public schools at the time). He co-founded an association for the advancement of trade, art, and science among Jews, which allowed Jewish boys to seek an education regardless of financial resources. Beer also voluntarily preached at high holidays (although he was a layman).

He amassed a very large and valuable library in his lifetime, which included manuscripts and incunabula purchased during his travels in Europe. Most of Beer's library was bequeathed to the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau and the rest was given to the University of Leipzig.
