Description
This is the bookstamp of Max Dienemann (1875-1939), German rabbi and author. Dienemann studied at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Breslau where he was ordained as a rabbi in 1898. He simultaneously studied Semitic Philology at the University of Breslau and received his doctorate in 1898 as well.
Dienemann wrote frequently on theology and philosophy, along with commentaries on the Torah. Although Dienemann was a fervent Zionist, he also considered himself to be a German patriot, serving as a rabbi in Ratibor and Offenbach am Main. He was a leader of the liberal German Jewry and ordained the first female rabbi, Regina Jonas, in 1935.
Dienemann was interned twice by the Nazis, in 1933 and 1938. He was held for two weeks in the Osthofen concentration camp for having described in a sermon the atrocities perpetrated in Biblical times and declaring that “to Jews it is the same thing whether the atrocities are committed by a French general or by the German police.” Shortly after his second internment he fled Germany to Tel Aviv and died approximately one month after he arrived.
