Content, J. M. (Jacob Moses), 1818-1898

Description

This is the bookstamp of Rabbi Jacob Moses Content (1818-1898), a rabbi and teacher in Amsterdam. Content studied at the Dutch Israelite Seminary and received his rabbinical ordination in 1838. He also trained to be a teacher.

Content was a devoted and talented student and received awards for his academic accomplishments. He began his teaching career in Germany, where he taught in Wurzburg and Emden under Samson Raphael Hirsch. When Content returned to Amsterdam, he taught at the local Bet Midrash (study hall) and lectured at the Nederlands Israƫlitisch Seminarium.

Content was known fondly as Rebbe Jokef amongst the Jews of Amsterdam, who often came to his home to seek advice. Content could be seen walking to synagogue dressed in a black linen suit with a high silk hat and his silver snuffbox in his hand. He was a beloved preacher and a pioneer in delivering sermons in Dutch.

Around the edge of his bookstamp in Hebrew is Content's Hebrew name and his title as member of the rabbinical college of Amsterdam. Content was appointed to this college after the death of Chief Rabbi Samuel Berenstein in 1838 in order to oversee religious affairs of the community. In the center of the stamp below Content's name is the Dutch word for rabbi.
