Description
This is the bookstamp of Michael Friedländer (1833-1910), an Orientalist scholar and professor at the Jews' College of London. Friedländer was originally from Posen, where he received his secular education at a local Catholic school and his Jewish education from a Cheder (Hebrew and religious school). His father also tutored him in Talmud and Hebrew grammar. He received his doctorate in 1862 after studying classical languages and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Halle.
In 1865 he became principal of Jews' College in London where he taught theology, Talmud, Jewish history, mathematics, biblical and rabbinical exegesis, and Arabic. His son-in-law was Moses Gaster, whose signature also appears in the Brisman collection.
