This is the bookstamp of George (also Gedaliah ben Isiah Meir) Silverstone (1872-1944), Orthodox rabbi and author.
Silverstone was born in Jasionowka, Poland and was educated at the yeshivas in Ruzhany and Telz. In 1891, he moved with his family to Liverpool, England. Ten years later, Silverstone became the rabbi of the Orthodox Congregation of Belfast, Ireland.
Silverstone moved with his family to America in 1906 due to the financial hardships of supporting a large family in the United Kingdom. He took a position as rabbi of the Combined Congregations of Washington, D.C. Silverstone became a prominent preacher there and was known for expressing his disapproval of non-Orthodox movements.
He published mostly sermons, which were sought after by other preachers who recognized his talent. His many benefactors allowed him to publish pamphlets almost every year.
Silverstone was also involved outside the synagogue as director of the Hebrew Home for the Aged of Washington, D.C. and the Hebrew Sanitarium of Denver. He established the first Talmud Torah school in Washington, D.C. and sought to promote Jewish education.
Silverstone was also an active Zionist and later decided to move to Erets Yisrael (Palestine). He did not manage to settle there permanently until a few years before his death in 1944.
Silverstone's bookstamp features his name and title in both English and Hebrew. In the center of the stamp is an illustration of the Western Wall, which is on the Western side of the Temple Mount in the Old City, Jerusalem. It is a holy site for Jews, who have visited on pilgrimage and prayed there for centuries. The faded writing at the bottom of the wall in the illustration says HaKotel HaMa'aravi (Western Wall) in Hebrew. Below the illustration is the Hebrew word for Jerusalem.
