Papo, Shemuel Shemaiah, 1708-
Description
This is the signature of Shemuel Shemaiah (Samuel Shemaiah or Shemayah) Papo , an Italian rabbi, hakham (Torah scholar) and writer of halakhic responsa.
Born in 1708, most likely in the city of Ragusa where his father Abraham David Papo was rabbi, Shemuel Shemaiah Papo relocated as a young man to Ancona to pursue his studies. There he studied at the Betei Midrash (Jewish study halls) of Joseph Lehava (Fiametta) and Samson Morpurgo, whose signature also appears in the Brisman collection.
In 1753, Papo befriended Rabbi Hayyim Joseph David Azulai (a notable Talmudist and Kabbalist) during his visit to Ancona, and the two maintained contact through correspondence.
The Ancona communal council granted Papo the title of hakham in July 1758 under the recommendation of one of Papo’s teachers, Isaac Constantini. He served as dayyan (member of the local rabbinical court) from 1756 to 1761, and was responsible for signing all of the court’s documents.
Papo’s name does not appear in the records of Ancona’s rabbinical court from 1761 to 1774 and it is believed he left Ancona during this time. The date and place of his death are unknown.
