Uri ben Aaron, ha-Levi
Dublin Core
Title
Uri ben Aaron, ha-Levi
Description
So central was Amsterdam to Hebrew printing that books published elsewhere still sought to link themselves to Amsterdam in the hope that it would increase respect for the product and improve sales. This Talmud commentary by Levi ben Shelomoh (Sefer Bet Leṿi, 1732) was published in Zholkva, in the Ukraine. The title page also announces that the publishers are grandsons of Uri ben Aaron, ha-Levi (also known as Uri Phoebus, 1625-1715) of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is set off in large type; larger, in fact, than Zholkva.
Likewise, the second image (from Daniel Terni's Sefer ʻIḳere ha-Daṭ, a commentary on Karo’s Shulchan Arukh) was published in Florence (1803), but it advertises its use of Amsterdam-based type ("Beʼotiyot Amsterdam") in larger letters.
