Bachrach, Jacob ben Moses, 1824-1896

Description

This is the bookstamp of Jacob Bachrach, a rabbi, grammarian, and noted proponent of rabbinical Judaism. Jacob Bachrach (also Bacharach or HaBachri) was born in Seiny (Sejny) in the district of Suwalki (then Russia, now Poland) in 1824. He was educated in yeshivot (Jewish religious institutions) and by his grandfather Judah Bachrach, whose signature also appears in the Brisman collection.

Bachrach served as the director of the Hebrew department at a printing press in Konigsberg for some years, where several books were printed under his supervision. He printed Jacob b. Asher’s “HaTurim” with his own valuable annotations between 1861 and 1864.

He later moved to Sebastopol, where he managed the distillery of Princess Helena Pavlovna (the aunt of Kaiser Alexander II). While in Sebastopol, he developed an interest in Karaite literature and engaged in polemics with the local Karaitic community. He was well respected by the Karaite scholars and made use of their book collections.

Later in life he moved to Bialystok and became involved with the Hovevei Zion (Lovers of Zion) movement, visiting Erets Yisrael (Palestine) in 1882. Bachrach also briefly served as private secretary to Rabbi Samuel Mohilever. He wrote several books, most of which were focused on defending rabbinical tradition against Karaism. He died in Bialystok on December 29th, 1896 (24th of Tevet, 5657).

Jacob Bachrach's bookstamp says "Jacob son of Rabbi Moses Bachrach."
