Description
This is the bookplate of Jakob Klatzkin, a philosopher, prolific author, and ardent Zionist. He was born in 1882 in Kartoz-Brioza (present day Byaroza, Belarus) where his father Eliyahu Klatzkin served as local rabbi. As a child he was educated by his father and in Lithuanian yeshivas. During his teenage years, Klatzkin left for Germany to study under German-Jewish philosopher Herman Cohen. In 1912 he received his doctorate from the University of Berne in Switzerland. He then returned to Germany where he wrote for Hebrew periodicals, served as director of the Jewish National Fund in Cologne, and established Jewish publishing firms.
He is widely known for his works on Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza and for compiling and editing 10 of 15 anticipated volumes of the German Encyclopaedia Judaica with Nahum Goldmann.
After the Nazis came to power, Klatzkin fled to Switzerland where he lectured on Jewish subjects. He then moved to the United States in 1941 and continued to lecture in Chicago at the College of Jewish Studies. He returned to Switzerland in 1947 where he later died at age 66. Klatzkin was also known for his nationalist and secularist Zionist ideology; he believed that the only place Jews should live is in a country of their own.
