Signature of Aldo Servi

Servi, Aldo, 1881-1963

This is the signature of Aldo Servi, an Italian mechanical engineer.

He was born in Pitigliano in 1881 and died in Milan in 1963. He was the son of Salomone Servi, deputy rabbi of Pitigliano, and Debora Lattes. The Servi family was at one point the largest family in the Jewish community of Pitigliano, followed closely by the Sadun and Lattes families to whom Aldo is related through his mother.

Aldo Servi's memoirs were published in Roberto Salvadori’s “La comunità ebraica di Pitigliano dal XVI al XX secolo” and serve as a valuable historical source on the Jewish community of Pitigliano, known as the “Little Jerusalem” of Tuscany.

The photograph shows Aldo Servi in 1905, upon earning his degree in industrial engineering from what is now called the Polytechnic University of Milan, and, at that time, the Royal Superior Technical Institute of Milan - Mechanical Section. (Photo courtesy of his son, Italo "Al" Servi.)

His signature appears both in Italian and Hebrew. Below his Hebrew signature, Servi inscribed the name of his hometown “Pitigliano”. The provenance markings of his father Salomone and relative Benedetto also appear in the Brisman collection.
