Subject

Nederlandsch Israëlietisch Seminarium te Amsterdam

Description

This is the bookstamp of the Nederlandsch Israëlietisch Seminarium te Amsterdam, which was born out of the theological seminary established in 1810 as the successor institution to the Bet ha-Midrash de Ashkenazim be-Amsterdam ʻEts Ḥayim of the Ashkenazic community of Amsterdam.

The institution became a state-recognized theological seminary for the education of Dutch rabbis. Several major changes were made to its curriculum, leading to a large turnover in leadership and a complete reorganization of the seminary. As part of the Ashkenazic community amendments of 1815, a “professor” (rabbi) was appointed at its head and the administration was placed in the hands of the Jewish community.

In 1836, the seminary incorporated a training program for religious leaders and preachers into its curriculum under the direction of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and became the official Ashkenazic rabbinical seminary in the country.

Since then, it has been referred to as the Nederlandsch Israëlietisch Seminarium (Dutch Israelite Seminary). The curriculum was also broadened to include many general subjects and to encourage the speaking and writing of Dutch (as opposed to Yiddish) by the seminary’s students.

For several years after its reorganization, the seminary suffered from poor management and pressure from the government and advocates of the Jewish Reform movement. In 1862, Polish rabbi Dr. Joseph Dunner was appointed as the seminary’s rector and successfully revived the seminary and reformed its curriculum to better train rabbis in the modern world. His students were widely successful and assumed all of the rabbinical positions in the Netherlands, eliminating the need for foreign rabbis. In 1876, the seminary also became the main center for training Hebrew teachers in the Netherlands.

When the seminary was seized by the Nazis during World War II, nearly all of the approximately 60 students were arrested and sent to their death. It is unclear if the seminary was closed for some time during and after the war, but it continues to operate today and has extended its curriculum to educate adults in general.

The institute’s stamp appears in three formats: one with its name abbreviated in Dutch in ink, a second embossed and a third embossed stamp which includes the name of the financial assistance fund “Sa’adat Bahurim”.
