To Cyril Lucas, 4 January 1956: "My original intention was to find a translator for all my books written in French, as I was very loath to take on the job myself. Patrick Bowles made quite a good fist at Molloy, but the revision of his text gave me so much trouble that I felt it would be simpler to do the following translations myself. I finished Malone Meurt some months ago and it will be published shortly by the Grove Press, New York. I am now faced with L'Innommable. I feel here again that the simplest thing is for me to translate it myself, though i do not intend to take it on for the moment. I am by no means a good translator, and my English is rusty, but I simply happen to be able still to write the queer kind of English that my queer French deserves." -The Letters of Samuel Beckett: 1941-1956, pp. 391-392
