Authorization for Donald Finkel to travel for Operation Deep Freeze from P. Lewis, Jr of the U.S. Naval Support Force, Antarctica, October 15, 1969. In 1969, Donald Finkel was the first poet to travel to Antarctica as part of a scientific expedition sponsored by the National Science Foundation to send artists to Antarctica. Finkel’s experiences inspired two books, Adequate Earth (1972) and Endurance: An Antarctic Idyll (1978).
