Description
This is the bookplate of Isaac Werne (born Wiernowsky), chief rabbi of the Loz Angeles orthodox rabbinate. Born in 1877 in Slonim, Poland, Werne was ordained by the rabbis of Slonim, Jettel, Azumitzs, and Warsaw in 1897. He received a Masters of Art degree in 1901 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1902, both from the University of Koenigsberg.
In 1904 Werne came to the United States, where he served as rabbi of the Congregation Emmanuath Israel in New York for one year. He continued on to serve at Worcester, Columbus, Ohio, and Chicago, before he went on to Los Angeles in 1914. In 1934 he was elected president of the Los Angeles orthodox rabbinate.
Werne passed away in 1940 and was survived by his sons, Dr. Benjamin Werne and Dr. Jacob Werne, and his wife, the former Merri Lerner.
