Minutes – Executive Committee Meeting - Thursday, October 18 [1923]

Dublin Core

Title

Minutes – Executive Committee Meeting - Thursday, October 18 [1923]

Description

p. 3: reports that “Mr. Burgess, a negro,” complained to the management when his season ticket was changed to the last row: the change was made because some white audience members in 1922-23 objected to sitting next to black patrons: the Manager (S. E. Macmillen) explained to Burgess that the issue involved “the entire negro problem” and was beyond the Symphony Society’s control: the Manager has been advised to place blacks in a separate section but to avoid the word “segregated” when discussing the issue with black ticketholders – Manager reports that 13 black patrons bought tickets last year, and 10 this year
