Bookplate of M. (Markus) Hirsch

Hirsch, M. (Markus), 1833-1909

This is the bookplate of Rabbi Markus (also Mordecai Amram) Hirsch (1833-1909), Chief Rabbi of Hamburg. Before attaining this position, Hirsch lead the Jewish communities of his native Hungary in the arbitration of conflicts, reorganization of Jewish elementary schools and creation of a new curriculum for the rabbinical seminary.

Rabbi Hirsch was also an accomplished author. His works have been published in Hebrew, German, and Hungarian and include “Divre Shalom ve-Emet” as well as sermons. His book "Beit Yisrael" included an unequivocal stance against the practice of cremation.

His bookplate features a drawing of a classroom, a variety books, and a Torah. One of the books is open and deals with religious subjects. There is also a candelabra on the left with a low burning flame, symbolizing long hours of study. Below the drawing it states "from the collection of books of Mordekhai Amram Hirsch." At the very bottom of the bookplate in small print is the statement "a gift sent from God, the source of life."
