Subject

Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums (Berlin, Germany)

Description

This is the bookstamp of the Bibliothek der Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums (est. 1870), the Library of the Higher Institute for Jewish Studies. This rabbinical seminary was established in Berlin under the direction of Abraham Geiger, who sought to create a research institution for the scientific study of Judaism without an affiliation to a particular movement or denomination.

All of the professors adhered to some form of Judaism and knew Hebrew fluently. Most of the students were Jewish and came from all over Europe and America to become rabbis and teachers. In later years, the school's reputation attracted a sizable body of non-Jewish students, including members of the Christian clergy.

It was noted in the early 1900s that the school's library contained approximately 12,000 volumes. The seminary's name was changed by the order of the government to Lehranstalt für die Wissenschaft des Judentums (Educational Establishment for Jewish Studies) from 1883-1923 and 1933-1942. Stamps with both of the institution's names appear in the Brisman collection.
