Title

Bookplate of Hieronymus Scholtz

Subject

Scholtz, Hieronymus, 1723-

Description

This is the bookplate of Hieronymus Scholtz (1723 - after 1807), a deacon and preacher at the church of St. Elizabeth at Breslau (Wrocław).

This is one of his two bookplates that appear in the Brisman Collection. It was made by engraver Johann Bartholomeus Strachowsky the Younger of Breslau. It features Scholtz’s initials, H.S., and the Latin phrase “Vratislaviae ad aedem S. Elis: Ecclesiastes,” which means “Breslau at the Church of St. Elisabeth: Preacher.”

At the bottom of the bookplate, below the intricate drawing, are the engraver’s name and an abbreviation for the city of Breslau. This particular bookplate was produced in 1780. It is one of at least eleven different bookplates, seven of which Strachowsky engraved.
