Description
This is the bookstamp of the Bet ha-midrash le-Rabanim be-Berlin Bibliothek (also Bibliothek des Rabbiner-Seminars zu Berlin) (est. 1873), the Library of the Rabbinical Seminary of Berlin. It is also known as the Hildesheimerian Rabbinical Seminary. The seminary was founded by Israel Hildesheimer, the rabbi of the Orthodox congregation Adass Jisroel, who also served as the seminary's first rector.
The seminary trained its rabbis in the modern Orthodox tradition and sought to combine Orthodox dogma with the scientific method. During the first year of the seminary's operation, there were only two other lecturers: Dr. David Hoffmann and Dr. Abraham Berliner. In 1874, Dr. Jacob Barth joined the faculty and in 1882 Dr. Hirsch Hildesheimer, Israel's son, also became a lecturer at the seminary. Other rabbis joined the seminary faculty in later years, including former pupils.
The seminary was forced to close by the Nazis in 1938 and most of its valuable library was sent to Tel Aviv. The seminary reopened in 2009 and has since ordained eight rabbis who work in cities all over Germany.
