Title

Signature of Judah Bachrach

Subject

Bachrach, Judah, -1846

Description

This is the signature of Judah ben Joshua Ezekiel Bachrach (also Bacharach), a rabbi, Talmudist and author.

He was born in Lithuania in approximately 1775 and died in Seiny (Sejny) in the district of Suwalki on April 25, 1846. Rabbi Judah Bachrach is the grandfather of Rabbi Jacob Bachrach, whose stamp also appears in the Brisman collection. He is also a descendant of Tobias Bachrach, a notable martyr who perished in Rishony after being accused of blood libel in the 17th century.

Rabbi Bachrach lived a very pious lifestyle. He donated the income from his position as rabbi at Seiny to the poor and lived off the interest of a modest investment arranged by his friends. He also served as the head of the rabbinical court of Seiny, succeeding Isaac Avigdor.

His annotations of the Talmud were published in “Nimmuke Hagrib” in Rom, Vilna after his death.
