Description
This is the signature of Mordechai Doctor (1868-1926), a Russian rabbi and author.
He was the son of Rabbi Tsvi Hirsch Doctor. According to the Ellis Island passenger records, he arrived in America from Hamburg on December 5th, 1903 at the age of 36 on the ship Moltke under the name “Morduch Doctor.” His last place of residence before departing for the United States is listed as Suwalk (present day Suwałki, Poland). His wife Malke Doctor arrived the following year on August 10th, 1904. They lived at 264 Cherry Street in New York.
He wrote a volume of sermons entitled “Kovets Derashot u-Ne’umim” which was published in New York in 1922. At the time that his sermons were published, Doctor had been serving as rabbi at the Kol Yisrael Anshe Polin synagogue in New York for close to 18 years. He is buried in Washington Cemetary in Brooklyn.
His signature appears in both the Hebrew and Cyrillic alphabets. The Hebrew inscription reads: Belongs to the yeshiva student (or young man) Mordechai Doktor. His name is followed by the word “here” and the illegible name of a city or town. The Cyrillic inscription reads: From the books of M. Doctor. His name is followed by the name of the town Suwałki written in both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets.
