Elizabeth Bishop to Gardner, May 14, 1956. Bishop thanks Gardner for her letter and tells her that she and other poets in Rio will be featured in a Brazilian newsreel about poets. Bishop is unsure if Gardner received her last letter where she informed her that she finally received a copy of Birthdays from the Ocean. So she tries to repeat the review that she gave Gardner in the last letter. She says that "The Milkman" was the best. Bishop tells Gardner that she sent Houghton Mifflin an impressive review of her work. She spoke of her pet toucan, name Uncle Sam, and of her cat. Bishop speaks about the changing weather, and the various animal and plant life. She hopes to return to New York in the Fall or Winter. She is investing most of her Pulitzer money in a Victrola and new records.
