Elizabeth Bishop to Gardner, December 9, 1957. Bishop tells Gardner that her name "Bella" reminds her of an old song that Bishop's grandfather used to sing to her. She meant to write to Gardner about her poem in the September issue of "Poetry" , but Bishop and Lota have returned to South America and are busy unpacking and getting their things from customs. Bishop talks of how the house has mildewed a little in their absence. She complements Gardner on her poem "The Widow's Yard" , but tells Gardner that she doesn't like the word "secrete" that Gardner uses in the poem. Bishop tells Gardner that she and Lota view beauty in nature differently. Lota thinks that Roque Island was not beautiful in comparison to the beaches in South America like Bishop thought it was. She also sends Gardner Christmas Greetings and wishes her well.
