Although he is on technical leave from the University, he still needs a salary so he continues to market poetry, doing readings, and broadcasting. Roethke asks Gardner to show something only to those whom she trusts. He doesn't want personal information getting out and is concerned about his mother and sister being harassed if his personal information were to get out. Roethke asks Gardner not to show his information to someone named Stevenson and he wishes her family well.
