Description
The Totem with clipping on verso, "Her poetry stems from life experinces," October 4, 1982. The poem "Totem" by May Swenson is about the Empire State Building and the shape of the poem is supposed to mimic the building's shape. In the article "Her poetry stems from life experinces," Swenson says that she has always wanted to record her life experiences. She finds solace in being alone and her poems are independent of outside influences. Swenson says that the writing of a poem cannot be taught, but what can be taught is an attitude that will let the poem come.
