Nemerov to Reed Whittemore, August 9, 1960. Nemerov tells Whittemore that he has decided not to take on the project of doing a book on Mann that he was contracted to do. He has returned the advance. He says that he does not like to commit himself to large projects by contract in advance because the stress becomes intolerable for him. He goes on to speak about the courage and energy of other writers. Nemerov wonders if the poetic character of mind is different from the novelistic or dramatic characters of mind. Nemerov tells Whittemore that Whittemore's essay makes him reflect on many things.
