Description

This is the bookstamp of Bibliothek der Synagogen Gemeinde zu Breslau (est. early 19th century), the Library of the Jewish community of Breslau.

The library was originally established as a reading room by M. Breslauer on Św. Antoniego Street. The Jewish community later became its patron and made it the community library under the guidance of Dr. K. Günsburg. The library was temporarily closed in 1843 due to an internal conflict but reopened in 1844.

The collection grew very quickly (there were 3,500 volumes in the 1860s) and included, among others, incunabula, old books from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and magazines and ephemera from Germany.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the library was moved to Włodkowica Street and then in 1926 to Łąkową Street. Before the library was seized by the Nazis, it contained about 12,000 volumes of Hebraica and Judaica. Part of the library's collection survived the plundering of Kristallnacht and after World War II it was sent to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.
