Title
Bookplate of Aharon Mosheh Schwartzchild
Subject
Schwartzchild, Aharon Mosheh
Description
This is the bookplate of Rabbi Aharon Mosheh Schwartzchild (or Schwarzschild), (1841-1912), a dayyan (member of the local rabbinical court) and moreh tsedek (rabbi who makes decisions pertaining to Jewish Law) in the Jewish community of Frankfurt am Main.
He was a follower of Moses Schreiber (also known by his nickname “Chatam Sofer”), an Orthodox rabbi from Frankfurt who vehemently opposed the Reform Jewish Movement.
Rabbi Aharon Mosheh's father, Rabbi Pinhas Zelig Schwartzchild, left the Jewish community of Frankfurt am Main with several others, including his brother Rabbi Zeligman, because they felt the community had degenerated as a result of the Reform Jewish Movement. They started a new community, Congregation Yeshurun (meaning “the People of Israel”), led by Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsh, and Rabbi Pinhas Zelig served as a leader in this new community until his death.
Rabbi Aharon Mosheh’s bookplate was applied posthumously, as indicated by the Hebrew acronym ztz”l, meaning “of blessed memory.”
