The efforts of the volunteers and local Mississippians during Freedom Summer had an immediate and lasting impact. The national media attention focused on Mississippi during the search for the missing civil rights workers brought the plight of black Mississippians into the national consciousness. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 passed Congress partly due to the events of Freedom Summer.
