Description

Title Description - Muntadas: On Translation presents a series of twenty-eight projects that engage the concepts of translation and interpretation in a way that addresses cultural, linguistic, political and economic issues. The large volume of graphic and written documentation generated by these projects is accompanied by essays written by Octavi Rofes, Mary Anne Staniszewski, Javier Arnaldo and José Lebrero Stals and many others' contributions. Muntadas, born in Barcelona, has lived and worked in New York since 1971. His work addresses social and political issues, the relationship between public and private space within social frameworks, issues of communication, and channels of information and the ways they may be used to censor central information or promulgate ideas. His projects, created in a variety of media such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations, are notable for their critical analysis of the role of the media in the symbolic construction of contemporary social reality. From the mid-1970s onwards his attention has been trained on the environment created by what he calls the "media landscape": political propaganda, advertising, economic and ideological power groupings, and cultural criticism. 29 June 2009 (printedmatter.org).
