Title
Signature of Gabriel Agol
Subject
Agol, Gabriel ben Mosheh, active 1605
Description
This is the signature and purchase inscription of Gabriel Agol, son of Mosheh, in a copy of David de Pomis's Tsemaḥ Daṿid. Sources mention a Jew named Gabriel Agol living in Cuneo in 1607. A teacher and secretary in the Cuneo community named Reushav Mordekai b.R. Gamali'el of Foligno gave Agol a copy of his manuscript, Śefat ha-iam, on January 16, 1607. Thus, while not a rabbi, Agol was probably a learned man, owner of at least one book and one manuscript.
Agol's inscription reads:
שנת שסו
בכסף מלא קניתי זה עני גבריאל בכ׳׳מ משה
עגול יצ׳׳ו
Translation:
Year 366 [1605/1606]
I bought it [the book] at full price
Poor Gabriel son of the [living] beloved teacher Mosheh Agol
The word "living" is a shortened translation of the acronym יצ״ו, literally "May his rock keep him and grant him life."
