Title
Rehearsal Script for Footfalls Performance, Spring, 1976
Subject
Beckett, Samuel, 1906-1989. Footfalls.
Description
Text shows minor variations when compared with the text published in book form by Faber, 1976.
Script for the opening of the play, one in a series at the Royal Court Theatre to celebrate Beckett’s 70th birthday. Beckett referred to Footfalls as his “pacing play,” as it features a distressed woman pacing relentlessly. The inspiration may have come from a real-life woman he knew, but by the time he finished writing it he had his favorite actress, Billie Whitelaw, in mind for the role.

To Geoffrey Thompson (who had attended the production at the Royal Court Theatre), 10 July 1976: "Footfalls is indeed a strange affair, perhaps unduly elliptic & elusive. But it is not aimed at the intelligence." -The Letters of Samuel Beckett: 1966-1989, p. 430
