Description
This is the bookstamp of Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien Bibliothek, the Library of the Jewish Community of Vienna. This library was established in 1814 through the donations from various benefactors including Anton von Schmid, a Christian printer of Hebrew books.
The library became not only a center of Jewish Viennese life, but also a center of Jewish scholarship. By the time the library's collection was seized by the Nazis, it had become one of the largest and most valuable collections of any European Jewish community.
After the war, the library was reassembled from hidden stockpiles of books discovered throughout Europe. In the 1950s, many of these books were transferred to libraries in Jerusalem on permanent loan. What remains in the library today is a small part of the collection that once symbolized the pre-Holocaust Jewish intellectual life that once flourished in Vienna.
