Description
This is the bookstamp of Naḥum (also Nachum) Dober Friedman (1843-1883), rabbi of Sadigura, Bukovina. He was the son of Rabbi Shalom Yosef Friedman of Sadigura. He served as a rabbi in the town of his birth where he was well respected. He died in Vienna in approximately 1883 at the age of forty.
His stamp bears his name in both Hebrew and German and has a lion in the center. Friedman likely picked a lion because of its symbolic meaning in the Jewish tradition. The lion is mentioned often in the Bible and represents power, bravery and royalty. Many Biblical personalities, such as Judah and Saul, are compared to the lion. In Biblical commentary, the lion represents mental prowess.
