Description
This is the bookstamp of Adolf Salvendi (1837-1914), a rabbi and member of Hovevei Zion (a Zionist organization). Salvendi served as a rabbi in Berent, Prussia and later as district rabbi in various communities in Frankenthal, Bavaria.
Salvendi opposed the Reform movement, which grew in popularity in the communities he presided over, and was a proponent of traditional religious education.
Salvendi was also involved in a number of charitable projects. He collected donations for the Jews of Russia, Persia, and Erets Yisrael (Palestine). He recorded and published the names of donors and their donation amounts, which helped to strengthen support for Zionist organizations throughout Western Europe, particularly in Germany. In recognition of Salvendi's efforts and support, he was made an honorary member of the central committee of Hovevei Zion at the Kattowitz Conference (an 1884 convention of Zionist organizations from multiple countries).
Dr. Salvendi's stamp bears his title, District Rabbi of Dürkheim-Frankenthal, written around the stamp's edge. In the center of the stamp is an illustration of the two stone tablets on which the ten commandments were etched, represented here by roman numerals. The tablets rest on an olive wreath.
Another stamp with Salvendi's name also appears in the same book. At the bottom of the stamp is the Hungarian word for gift, denoting that Salvendi was the book's donor. It appears he donated the book to a Hungarian library, whose stamp has been crossed out on the title page. It is likely that this is not Salvendi’s signature, but was added to the gift stamp by the recipient.
