Young People in the Hampton Archive

This section will analyze the role and presence of young children and college students in the Civil Rights Movement from 1963-1965. We use photographs, interviews, and clips fromEyes on the Prizeto explore the impact of young people on the movement. Furthermore, we study the way in which representations by Henry Hampton differ from those of the mainstream media, especially in the face of violence. Children who were subject to violence were portrayed as either innocent victims or insensate pickaninnies. This section will include pages dedicated to the Children's Crusade of 1963, SNCC and Freedom Summer of 1964, and the march from Selma to Montgomery of 1965.
